Wandering Melbourne #1: Great Ocean Road | 2016

Hello lovelies! I’m so excited to be sharing my first travel post with you all, which is coming to you from sunny Australia! I’m currently in St Kilda, Melbourne, visiting my brother for a few weeks over the holidays – which I’m loving so far! It’s crazy how different life is here in comparison to back in Scotland. Everyone is super chill and I’m really enjoying the change from busy city life back home – I totally needed the break!

I’m still getting used to life here, in particular the heat, but I’m liking the culture and lifestyle in this part of the world. St Kilda is filled with cute little bars and restaurants which I can’t wait to explore further. Even the McDonald’s here is next level – selling frozen coke (which is much appreciated and cherished in 38 degree heat)! I don’t think I’m going to want to leave in a couple of weeks!

I’m majorly travel hungry at the minute, and want to share all of my adventures and experiences with you, so I’m starting off with my trip down Great Ocean Road the other day. Apart from chilling in St Kilda, this is the first proper thing I’ve done in Australia (the jet lag has been a bit of a killer). For any of you who don’t know, Great Ocean Road is a national heritage, running roughly from Melbourne to Adelaide (243km). I only went on a little day trip down this road, so didn’t get too far down, but I saw some lovely scenes on my way.

Our first stop off was in Torquay, which you might have heard of if you’re into surfing. It’s a really cool little costal town, with some amazing beaches (I believe a lot of surfing competitions take place here too). Here, we visited Bells Beach. Although it was raining, it didn’t stop me taking a walk along the sand and even splashing about in the freezing cold water. Because of the torrential rain, I didn’t get my camera out to take any pictures, but here’s one I found on Google of the beach:

Stunning right? By the afternoon, the sun had come out and we moved down to Fairhaven beach. I actually took some of my own snaps here! It’s incredible how clear and blue the ocean is in Australia; it was amazing to just sit down and appreciate the lovely weather and outdoors (even if I did get a little bit sunburnt). It’s so refreshing to swim around in the ocean, it left me completely rejuvenised!

As I’ve said, I’m loving Australia so far, and feeling a lot more healthy and energetic here. I’ll keep you guys updated with some other fun things that I’m up to while I’m here 🙂 I hope you all had a lovely Christmas!   2. I can’t wait to forward your post to my younger brother. He’s quite the world traveller, and I don’t think he’s been to Australia yet. I’ll bet your pictures will tempt him. When is the best time of the year to go?

  3. He’ll have to wait until next year then. He’s moving mid-January and I’m sure even if he could work a quick trip in, he couldn’t afford it right now. He also has been promising to visit friends in Israel since last spring. I am scared to death for him to go. Have you ever been?

  4. I never went anywhere when I was your age, and now I am unable to travel due to old age issues. I am proud of you for making the effort to travel now, and I will travel vicariously through your posts. this first trip to Australia was wonderful. Thank you.

  7. Hi Shannon, great to hear you’re enjoying Australia! I arrived from the UK in November, I think I’ve just about acclimatized to the heat now! Glad you enjoyed The Great Ocean Road, It was one of the best things I’ve done in Australia! Happy Travels!
